UK Professional Investor Access
Eligible UK professional investors will gain futures, perpetuals, and crypto options access, Keith Grose, UK head of crypto exchange Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN), wrote in a company blog post on Aug. 11. The rollout broadens the exchange’s UK product range and connects digital assets with traditional financial markets through one platform.
Grose wrote:
“Eligible investors can trade over 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities, and FX 24/7 with up to 50x leverage.”
The expansion follows Coinbase’s July UK investment services authorization, which authorizes regulated financial instruments alongside the company’s separately regulated crypto products. That regulatory status underpins the company’s “Everything Exchange” strategy for professional investors seeking multiple asset classes through one venue.
Authorization for the derivatives rollout runs through CB Payments Ltd.’s investment-services permission, separate from the wider UK crypto regime arriving next year. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) set requirements including financial resilience, capital, stress testing, market integrity, and stablecoin rules under a new crypto regime that takes effect Oct. 25, 2027.
Contract Types and Leverage
Perpetual contracts feature exposure across crypto, commodities, equities, and foreign exchange without expiration dates, while leverage tops 50x for eligible participants. The structure enables long, short, and delta-neutral portfolio strategies alongside continuous 24/7 market access.
Dated futures carry fixed settlement dates and leverage of up to 20x across commodity and financial contracts. Cost of carry enters the contract price at execution instead of ongoing funding rates, while completed dated-futures onboarding unlocks eligibility for perpetual contracts.
Crypto options provide another structure for calls, puts, spreads, and other single-leg or multi-leg strategies. These instruments grant buyers the right, rather than the obligation, to buy or sell under specified conditions, while derivatives amplify both exposure and potential losses through leverage.
Coinbase’s Wider Derivatives Strategy
The UK authorization widens Coinbase’s effort to place regulated derivatives and conventional investments within a common trading environment. The July license introduced scope for derivatives and equities alongside crypto products. This includes perpetual futures linked to crypto, equities, and commodities for advanced participants.
International products added 24/7 stock perpetual futures for eligible traders outside the U.S. Those instruments supplied synthetic exposure to major U.S. equities through leveraged contracts tied to individual stocks and exchange-traded funds.
The broader model incorporates pre-IPO perpetuals, stock options, and planned tokenized stocks. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong described those products in June as part of a strategy combining spot markets, derivatives, and other financial instruments within a common platform.
The exchange noted:
“The demand for these instruments is clear: global crypto derivatives trading volume routinely reaches 4.4x the volume of crypto spot markets.”
Progressive availability begins over the coming weeks rather than through a single marketwide release, and the initial phase limits participation to qualifying UK professional investors. Coinbase’s UK business integrates futures, perpetuals, and options into its regulated investment-services offering as access rolls outward.
