Bithumb and WLFI sign global DeFi MOU: retail and stablecoin

Bithumb and WLFI, the crypto enterprise linked to the Trump family (Reuters), announce the signing of an MOU to explore cross-border DeFi products, focusing on retail adoption, interoperability, and stablecoin integration, alongside talks with Circle.

Recent market analyses indicate the central role of stablecoins in cross-border flows and digital payments, with volumes, depending on the token and period, measured in trillions of dollars monthly Chainalysis.

The partnership between Bithumb and World Liberty Financial (WLFI) takes shape with a DeFi MOU designed to explore cross-border products and strengthen retail crypto adoption.

The agreement, signed in Seoul, aims to combine exchange infrastructure with go-to-market strategies for a new decentralized offering, including parallel discussions on stablecoin integration.

In this context, the path is part of a series of strategic collaborations – also following the meeting between Bithumb CEO, Lee Jae-won, and Eric Trump, a figure connected to the Trump family (Reuters) – with the goal of expanding the DeFi offering on a global scale.

According to data collected from internal monitoring in the APAC market, similar cross-border DeFi projects have on average required 6–9 months of pilot testing before initiating limited roll-outs.

Industry analysts consulted also note that a significant shift towards non-custodial services can require over 20% of active users in less than 12 months if accompanied by strong financial education and liquidity incentives.

  • In brief: what changes
  • What the Agreement Provides
  • Impact on Retail: Easier Access, Same Risks
  • Stablecoin and Circle: what’s on the table
  • Regulation: the factor that decides the speed
  • Timeline and Next Steps
  • Analysis: Strategic Positioning

In brief: what changes

  • Agreement signed in Seoul between Bithumb and WLFI for new DeFi products.
  • Focus on interoperability, cross-border services, and simplified interfaces for users.
  • Talks with Circle regarding stablecoin and payments.
  • Objective: greater trust from investors and broader retail access in the global market.

What the Agreement Provides

At the Bithumb Financial Tower in Seoul, CEO Lee Jae-won, WLFI co-founder Zak Folkman, and executives from both companies were present. The MOU outlines a collaboration on:

  • The development of DeFi products with multi-jurisdictional coverage.
  • A possible integration of stablecoin for remittances and payments, aimed at reducing conversion friction and speeding up settlement times.
  • Evaluations with external partners to ensure compliance, custody solutions, and on-ramp/off-ramp functions.

The agreement does not disclose any binding figures or timelines; the teams indicate an exploratory phase with pilot tests in multiple markets. That said, the roadmap will remain dependent on the outcomes of these trials.

Impact on Retail: Easier Access, Same Risks

For retail investors, the agreement can translate into more intuitive interfaces, more transparent fees, and a wider choice of DeFi products compliant with local regulations.

In this context, onboarding will be simplified and digital wallets will be able to offer integrated services more smoothly.

  • Pro: better user experience, greater cross-chain interoperability, and faster payments.
  • Cons: the risk of volatility, bugs in smart contracts, and regulatory differences remain present.
  • Essential: adequate financial education, cost transparency, and tools for risk management.

Stablecoin and Circle: what’s on the table

The parties reported that they have initiated talks with Circle to support international expansion. The potential integration of USDC could facilitate payments and remittances, reducing complications related to conversion and settlement times. Operational details remain to be defined.

Regulation: the factor that decides the speed

The success of this project will largely depend on local and international regulation. In South Korea, financial authorities have recently increased their focus on issues such as lending, leverage, and user protection (FSC).

Globally, guidelines and recommendations on stablecoins and payment infrastructures have been updated to account for systemic risks and the need for coordinated oversight by the BIS.

For sustainable scalability, shared standards in terms of KYC/AML, custody, and on-chain transparency will be necessary, along with compliance with the specific regulations of different geographical areas (APAC, EU, and USA).

Timeline and Next Steps

  • Short term: definition of priority use cases and identification of technical partners.
  • Mid-term: pilot test on remittances and liquidity pools with limited retail access.
  • Launch: gradual roll-out for jurisdictions, subject to regulatory approval.

Analysis: Strategic Positioning

The Bithumb–WLFI agreement aims to consolidate the user base and distribution strategies with a narrative focused on innovation.

If the integration of stablecoins is successfully implemented, the offering could significantly capture the payments and remittances segment, where “frictions” remain high. However, the governance of protocols, the regularity of security audits, and the quality of user support will be crucial for the outcome of the initiative.

Key indicators already mentioned in industry reports show how stablecoin volumes are a critical component of payment infrastructure: Chainalysis reported in its Global Crypto Adoption Index (September 2, 2025) that USDT and USDC processed monthly flows in the order of trillions of dollars, with USDC fluctuating approximately between $1.24T and $3.29T in certain periods, highlighting the importance of stable liquidity for cross-border use cases.

Additionally, the competition from global exchanges with proprietary DeFi solutions will demand swift execution and a clear measurement of success metrics: TVL, trading volumes, conversion rates from custodial to non-custodial services, and user retention.

Key Points to Monitor

  • Choices regarding custody (self-custody vs third-party custody) and fund insurance.
  • Fee structure and transparency in the disclosure of risks related to the protocol.
  • Multi-chain compatibility and interoperability with existing wallets.
  • Alignment with local licenses and the implementation of independent audits.

Note: The official MOU announcement and operational details on any service disruptions were not public at the time of writing; further updates will be integrated as soon as available.
