Founder of Binance CZ, Changpeng Zhao, opined that Hong Kong ought to have more cryptocurrencies opened up. Hong Kong simply allows being listed on four coins, including Bitcoin, Ether, Avalanche and Chainlink, which, according to him, is not enough to transform the city into a powerful crypto listings hub. He requests regulators to adopt a more lenient regime, such as that of Japan, where licensed exchanges may list more tokens without everyone having to be included in large financial indexes. This flexibility, said CZ, could allow Hong Kong to compete with the U.S., UAE, and Japan as a global crypto hub.
Speed and Flexibility Key to Global Status
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, CZ told the publication that he likes the fact that the Hong Kong government is not hesitant to back Web3. He added further that the future of Web3 will be determined by the rate at which regulations are being made, rather than its present position.
He proposed a fast rule to permit more crypto listings that could bring big transformations. CZ cited the example of decentralised Japan as one that can be applied in other places. Meanwhile, Hong Kong will release a more robust policy on digital assets by the end of 2021.
Current Rules Restrict Innovation
The approved tokens under the rules of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) established in August 2023 to permit retail trading are those listed in at least two major indexes, one of which is a traditional finance-based index. The consequence of this is that Hong Kong has restricted crypto listings to only four assets and the new market ideas have decelerated. Other destinations such as the United States and the UAE, on the contrary, allow traders to use more tokens. CZ indicated that such restrictions could keep the investors and entrepreneurs out of the financial markets in Hong Kong.
Complementary Reforms Underway
The scope of regulatory reforms in Hong Kong does not end with crypto listings. Recent policy developments include stricter custody requirements of virtual asset trading platforms, regimes of stablecoin licensing, and consultation on OTC and custodian structures.
