Deadly Floods Claim Lives and Prompt National Response
The floods in Bahia Blanca, which began on March 7, have caused widespread destruction. A year’s worth of rain, 260 millimeters, fell in just eight hours. This has resulted in at least 16 deaths. The disaster left much of the coastal city without power and caused an estimated $400 million in infrastructure damage, according to Bahia Blanca’s Mayor Federico Susbielles. Rescue efforts continue, with two young girls, aged one and five, still missing after being swept away by the floodwaters.
Argentina’s government has responded to the crisis with significant measures. President Javier Milei declared a three-day national mourning period. The government also authorized 10 billion pesos ($9.2 million) in financial aid for Bahia Blanca, a port city of 300,000 residents in Buenos Aires province. Military trucks have been deployed to patrol the flooded streets, assisting with evacuations and relief efforts.
