Best Projects & Apps on Core DAO: Driving BTCFi

Bitcoin, the flagship crypto asset, has long been nicknamed “digital gold” due to its store of value. With a market cap exceeding 1 Trillion, the crypto asset drives the price movements of basically every digital currency in the broader crypto landscape. Despite this, many have failed to tap into its rich potential due to constraints in its smart contract functionality.

This is where BTCFi comes in. This phenomenon, otherwise called Bitcoin Decentralized Finance, is a feature that aims to transform Bitcoin into an active participant in the DeFi ecosystem. One platform pushing the BTCFi narrative is Core DAO. This Layer 1 blockchain protocol merges Bitcoin’s unparalleled security with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility via its innovative Satoshi Plus Consensus mechanism.

Core DAO’s vision is to expand Bitcoin’s usage beyond holding. The blockchain platform wants to make Bitcoin the epicenter of DeFi use cases, which includes lending, trading, staking, and more, similar to all other protocols across other chains (Solana, Ethereum, BNB Chain, etc). Since its mainnet launch in January 2023, Core DAO has made significant progress, creating a thriving DeFi ecosystem. According to DeFiLlama, its Total Value Locked (TVL) across DeFi has surpassed the $400M mark. The main drivers responsible for this surge in the DeFi landscape are the protocols building atop its scalable, secure and decentralized ecosystem.

Each of these platforms pushes the BTCFi narrative in its unique way. In this article, we will take a look at the top four protocols driving Core DAO’s vision to make Bitcoin a beacon of DeFi utilities.

Colend: Redefining Bitcoin Lending

Lending is a core feature in DeFi and Colend champions it on Core DAO. Colend is a lending platform that allows users to leverage their Bitcoin holdings for lending and borrowing assets, while also earning yield. With Colend, users can secure loans by using $BTC as collateral or earn yield by lending it out. What’s more, all this is done without the need for intermediaries.

With a TVL of over $100M, Colend is leading the park in the DeFi platforms pushing the BTCFi narrative on the Layer 1 blockchain. This surge is backed by its robust, yet straightforward infrastructure. The protocol ensures users are able to deposit BTC into Core’s non-costodial staking system via its lending pools. Borrowers can then access these funds by using an alternative collateral, allowing BTC depositors (Lenders) to earn rewards in $CORE or other tokens.

This mechanism propels BTC from a passive store or asset to a yield-generating asset. Hence, Colend is a leader in pushing BTCFi on the Satoshi Plus-backed blockchain. With Colend, users can maximize their Bitcoin holdings without sacrificing custody or security. As Bitcoin adoption continues to increase, the platform is poised to onboard many users looking to put the flagship asset to work and earn rewards.

Bitflux: Enhancing Bitcoin Liquidity

Bitflux brings Bitcoin liquidity into the Core DAO ecosystem. The DEX platform enables users to swap BTC and BTC-based assets with low-slippage, fulfilling its mission to make Bitcoin transactions more efficient and accessible. Additionally, the protocol supports the BTCFi narrative by ensuring that the top asset becomes a dynamic and yield-generating tool for users at large.

Backed by over 75% of Bitcoin’s hash power, Bitflux leverages Bitcoin’s security, offering trustless swaps for its users. Users can easily trade BTC or CORE tokens, provide liquidity on supported pools, and earn rewards. The protocol enhances Bitcoin usability by integrating the asset into everyday financial transactions.

Perhaps, the standout feature of the platform is its Bitcoin-centric liquidity. Unlike traditional DEX platforms that prioritize altcoins, Bitflux puts BTC at the center stage, allowing Bitcoin enthusiasts to explore DeFi with their preferred asset. The platform aims to pave the way for more BTCFi adoption on Core by streamlining liquidity, proving that Bitcoin can be flexible.

Glyph Exchange: Bridging the Gap Between Bitcoin and DeFi Ecosystems

Glyph Exchange is pushing boundaries on Core DAO with its interoperability capabilities. The DEX is cross-chain compatible, connecting EVM liquidity with Bitcoin-based assets. This enables the seamless trading of BRC-20 tokens (Bitcoin’s Token Standard), the popular ERC-20 tokens, and inscription-based assets like Ordinals.

The protocol leverages Bitcoin’s security via Core DAO’s Satoshi Plus Consensus to offer users seamless swapping of assets with low fees and high efficiency. With Glyph, users can trade BTC-based assets for Core or Ethereum-based assets and vice versa, promoting inclusivity for the broader Bitcoin ecosystem.

The DEX’s significant contribution to the BTCFi narrative is its ability to link Bitcoin with EVM-compatible networks, expanding the asset’s utility beyond its native chain. As BRC-20 tokens and Bitcoin ordinals gain traction, Glyph Exchange will be at the forefront of pushing Bitcoin finance to the broader crypto landscape.

Solv Protocol: Pioneering Bitcoin Staking

Solv Protocol brings the Proof of Stake (PoS) concept to Bitcoin on the Core DAO blockchain. The Bitcoin staking platform allows BTC holders to lock their assets in Core’s non-costodial staking system and earn CORE rewards without relinquishing control. In addition, the protocol offers cross-chain interoperability, allowing users’ staked BTC to interact with other blockchains.

By combining Core’s hybrid consensus–Bitcoin’s Proof of Work with Delegated Proof of Stake–Solv ensures that staked BTC promotes network security while also rewarding users. This focus on security and rewards exemplifies BTCFi’s ethos of maximizing Bitcoin’s potential.

The platform ensures that Bitcoin can participate in staking mechanisms, designed initially to suit altcoins. As the BTCFi narrative expands, more users will flock into Solv Protocol to ensure that their Bitcoin holdings can generate passive income.

Core DAO and the BTCFi Revolution

The protocols mentioned above combine to advance Core DAO’s vision of BTCFi in their distinct ways. These platforms support Core’s Bitcoin-aligned infrastructure with Colend unlocking lending, Bitflux enhancing liquidity, Glyph bridging ecosystems, and Solv pioneering staking. Most importantly, Core DAO’s 218 EH/s of delegated hash power provides a suitable foundation for these protocols to continue innovating in the blockchain industry.

Speaking of the BTCFi revolution, it isn’t just about adding use cases to Bitcoin but also about redefining its role in the decentralized finance world. These protocols could well prove to propel Bitcoin’s large market cap into a powerful “capital powerhouse” instead of a dormant reserve asset that depends on the general sentiment and global adoption.

While the prospect of BTCFi looks enticing to neutrals, challenges remain. The major loophole will be convincing conservative Bitcoin holders to embrace the narrative and support DeFi adoption. In any case, the traction is growing. As mentioned earlier, Core’s TVL and ecosystem growth offers hope for BTCFi revolution in the long run.

In the meantime, these four protocols are crafting the future of the Bitcoin ecosystem where the flagship asset isn’t just held, but harnessed. For both Bitcoin maximalists, and DeFi enthusiasts, the BTCFi ecosystem is one to watch. However, if and when it eventually reaches peak adoption, will it propel Bitcoin into the decentralized frontier with many concluding that it is just a good store of value?
