Another historic milestone has passed in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin (BTC) has become the world’s fifth most valuable asset, exceeding $2.2 trillion in market value for the first time this week, thanks to its strong rally.

Bitcoin Market Cap Surpasses $2.2 Trillion: New Peak in Institutional Interest, Options Market Points to More

Bitcoin has thus overtaken giants such as Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG), while falling behind only tech giants such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA), as well as gold with an estimated value of around $22 trillion.

BTC’s strong price movement around $110,000 is supported by intense buying across all investor groups, from whales to individual investors. This positive atmosphere in the market is interpreted as an indication that Bitcoin is increasingly being adopted in the traditional financial world.

With one week left until the May option expiration date, most investors have taken positions in call options at $110,000. In June options, it is noteworthy that call positions of $200,000 and $300,000 are concentrated. This reveals the market’s expectation that the upward potential will continue.

Institutional Players and ETF Demand at Peak

  • MicroStrategy (MSTR) has announced a new $2.1 billion perpetual preferred stock offering to continue its Bitcoin investments.
  • Meanwhile, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) fund received $877 million in inflows on Thursday alone, bringing its total net inflow to $47.6 billion, indicating strong institutional investor interest in the ETF.

Decoupling From Traditional Markets: Is Bitcoin Becoming a Macro Hedge?

On the macroeconomic front, Bitcoin is clearly different from traditional assets. In the last five days, BTC is up 5%, while the S&P 500 is down more than 1%. This negative correlation shows that Bitcoin stands out as a “macro hedge”.
