A new study finds that 42% of U.S. millennials have made purchases using cryptocurrency, with 8% using it whenever possible and 14% on occasion.
93% of Millennials Aware of Crypto
With U.S. millennials increasingly aware of or owning cryptocurrencies, a new study found 42% have purchased “something” using crypto. In fact, the Millennial Shopping Habits: Trend Report 2025 by Coupon Follow found 8% of study participants use it whenever possible, while 14% use it on occasion.
The study, however, found one-fifth (20%) of the participants rarely use cryptocurrency when making purchases, while another 11% hardly use it for shopping. The Coupon Follow study findings are consistent with past studies that suggest this age group is open to embracing emerging financial technologies.
To illustrate, a 2021 Bankrate study found nearly half of millennial Americans were “at least somewhat comfortable” investing in crypto assets. The same study also found 12% of U.S. millennials viewed bitcoin as the best way to invest money that they won’t need for at least 10 years.
However, nearly four years later, not only are more millennials aware of crypto (93%), but a sizable number use it for everyday purchases. For instance, the Coupon Follow study data indicates that 4% of the 1,185 U.S. millennials surveyed have made more than 10 purchases with crypto in the last 12 months.
Another 15% of the participants indicated they made between six and 10 purchases with crypto over the same period, while 45% made between two and five purchases. However, 20% of the participants did not use their crypto to make purchases.
Meanwhile, besides embracing cryptocurrency, U.S. millennials are also using artificial intelligence (AI) to help with online shopping. In fact, the Coupon Follow study found that more than half (54%) of the participants plan to use AI when shopping online over the next 12 months. However, the study data indicate that more men (60%) than women (50%) plan to use AI when shopping online.
